Russell Frederic Fjeldsted was born in 1932 in Ephraim, Utah. His parents were Daniel Russell Fjeldsted and Mae Singer. He married Barbara Croft in May 1955, and they had six children.

Mr. Fjeldsted served his country in the armed forces, receiving a commission as a second Lieutenant in 1955. Since that time, he has served on numerous state and local commissions and boards. These include his service as a Logan City Commissioner from 1972-1976, a library board member (chair of this board in 1979), elected to the Intermountain Power Agency Board of Directors and Intermountain Power Plant Coordinating Committee, 1992-2015, a Logan Power Advisory Board member from 1994-1998, and as a Utah State Fairground Board member from 1996-2004 for which he was appointed by Governor Leavitt. In addition to his public service, he owned and operated the Sportsman, a main street fixture since 1947, from 1963 to 2000.

Mr. Fjeldsted was elected Mayor of Logan in November 1989. His administration was responsible for several significant benefits to the community. In 1990 the voter passed a special tax levy that led to the formation of the Logan Transit District (now Cache Valley Transit District) and fare-free bus service in April 1992. The Capitol Theater was remodeled by a nonprofit (now the Cache Valley Center for the Arts), and it reopened in January 1993 as the Ellen Eccles Theatre. Also in 1993, the Logan River Golf Course was opened to the public. Automated countywide garbage collection was also begun during this administration. At his departure, Mr. Fjeldsted left with all general obligation bond indebtedness paid off and a $12 million surplus in the treasury.

  • April ~ According to the United States Census, the population of Logan was 32,762. 45

  • ~ The Smithsonian Institute's National Air and Space Museum added Lt. Russell L. Maughan's coast-to-coast flight to their Milestones of Flight Commemorative Series. Maughan made the flight in a Curtiss PW-8 airplane. This recognition came on the 50th anniversary of the flight. 7

   1992

  • ~ The Logan Transit District [Now Cache Valley Transit District] was established to provide free bus service in Logan City.

   1993

  • ~ The Logan River Golf Course, a division of the Logan Parks and Recreation Department was opened for use by the public. 13

  • ~ Restoration of the magnificent Capitol Theatre was completed and renamed, "The Ellen Eccles Theatre" in honor of the prominent Utah pioneer and Logan matriarch known for her contributions to the Cache Valley Community.
