Staff Reading Pick
![]() Here is another reading pick from the Logan Library Staff. Book: The Emerald Atlas by John Stephens Recommended by: Becky, Children's Librarian Three children have been raised in a series of orphanages since being abandoned by their parents, and finally end up in a mysterious mansion where they discover an old book which allows them to travel through time, catapulting them into an adventure filled with mystery, mayhem, and magic. When I started reading this, my hopes weren't too high - reviewers had said it reminded them of many other fantasy novels including "The Golden Compass," "Harry Potter," "The Hobbit," and the "Narnia" books, and I was afraid it would be derivative and cliched. It's not. This is a completely original fantasy novel with an incredible adventure story, interesting characters, and writing that makes me feel like I'm watching a movie. Moments of horror and humor are blended seamlessly into the mix. Although it's aimed at middle-school-age readers, I highly recommended it for fantasy-novel fans of all ages.
