![]() ![]() Book: Stars and swastikas : the boy who wore two uniforms by Walter Schröder Recommended by: Barbara, Library Technical Assistant Walter Schröder's parents came to the US after WWII. Walter was born in the US and lived in New York until he was seven, when his parents moved back to Germany. At school he had to become part of the Hitler Youth and when he was 15 he was drafted and sent to man Antiaircraft guns. He was captured and soon it was realized that he spoke "Yank" and was used as a translator. When it was found out that he was a US citizen he was drafted into the US Army. What is interesting about the book is that it isn't an everyday WWII memoir, but a great description of life during the Nazi Era and early cold war years. Walter ended up working for the U.S. Defense Department for almost thirty years and was awarded the "Navy Superior Service Medal & Citation" for his contributions. Want more reading suggestions?
