Bookcover: On ActingHere is another reading pick from the Logan Library Staff.

Book: On Acting by Laurence Olivier
Recommended by: Joseph, Associate Librarian
This final book by Sir Laurence, generally acknowledged as the greatest actor of the 20th century, is equal parts memoir and acting instruction.  Written only three years before his death in 1989, it provides a unique look into the acting profession on stage and screen by one who was in the middle of it from the 1920s onward.  I highly enjoyed this book and am grateful the author chose to record both his advice and memories before leaving us to return to the warm stage lights in the sky.

Bookcover: All But My LifeHere is another reading pick from the Logan Library Staff.

Book: All But My Life by Gerda Weissman Klein
Recommended by: Barbara, Library Technical Assistant
All But My Life is the biography of Gerda Weissmann Klein and is the basis for the moving HBO Academy Award winning documentary, "One Survivor Remembers". The book tells of Gerda's experiences during WWII as she loses her family and friends, suffers the deprivations of concentration camps, and embarks on long winter marches through Europe.

Though her story tells of horrors, it also mentions friendships and the goodness of people who helped her. This summer I visited a Jewish Synagogue in Poland. Because not one Jewish person returned to this town, the Synagogue now sits empty as a memorial to those who lost their lives. As I visited, I couldn't help but think of Gerta and how amazing it was that a young girl could survive what she did and still see the goodness in people.

Bookcover: Candy and Me (a love story)Here is another reading pick from the Logan Library Staff.

Book: Candy and Me (A Love Story) by Hilary Liftin
Recommended by: Kara, Librarian
I love candy, and I love this book. Hilary Liftin crafts a memoir using her love for all things sugar coated as a lens to examine her life. Liftin is so honest and so entertainingly self-effacing that you can't help but like her. This book will make you nostalgic for candy you haven't had since you were a child and grateful for the sweetness that already exists in your life. Perfect for the reader with a sweet tooth.
