Book: 1984 by George Orwell

Recommended by: Joseph

Wow, what a story. Fear. Instinct. (mis)Information. I'm not sure what to say except that, not unlike the experiences of protagonist Winston Smith, the weight of the world Orwell creates surrounds and overpowers and, with only slight glimpses of hope along the way, crushes into dust.

Also, if you're interested in learning about the author of 1984, check out Why Orwell Matters, in which the late Christopher Hitchens serves as your personal guide to Orwell's life and career in ten chapters of lively analysis.

Book: Charles and Emma: The Darwins' Leap of Faith by Deborah Heligman

Recommended by: Joseph

I started reading this curious book (a study of the Darwins' marriage written for teens?) on Darwin Day (February 12), 2016. I was interested in learning more about how they made their long and mixed-belief relationship work (throughout their 40+ years together, Charles was a skeptic and Emma was a believer). Turns out, it was the things that we already know make strong relationships: mutual respect, communication, love, open minds, trust, physical touch, shared goals.

What a great story. The author considered titling this book Charles, Emma, and God: The Darwins at Home, which I think is just perfect. Make sure to check out Creation, the fantastic film about Mr. and Mrs. Darwin starring married actors Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly.

Book: Where the Wind Leads by Vinh Chung

Recommended by: Marie

A truly miraculous story about a Vietnam refugee family's perilous journey to freedom as they face sickness, death, encounter pirates on the open sea, and the people who sacrificed to rescue them.

Settling in America the Chung family face many obstacles as they navigate a new culture, overcome poverty and make a new life for themselves in a foreign country. Through it all, they find faith, sustain strong family ties and ultimately obtain the American dream as their children graduate from college.

The book culminates with the author becoming a doctor with a degree from Harvard Medical School - the ultimate symbol of pride and achievement for the Chung family. An inspiring read!
