Our Library - Our Future: Public Comments and Ideas
As we enter the planning phase for a new Logan Library, we've been soliciting comments from Logan citizens at public meetings, on our website, and via comment forms available in the Library. This is a summary of the ideas we've received.
Programs/Services
What programs and services should the Library feature?
- More internet access.
- Keep storytime for the preschoolers.
- More programs to engage teenagers during the summer.
- Genealogy resources & places to access sources.
- Self-Checkout.
- Childrens programs similar to the Ada County Library in Idaho. They have story times for different ages, art/craft project classes for preschoolers, music and movement classes for mommies and toddlers.
- More historic displays with information about different areas of the country.
- Computer classes for Internet and word processing.
- Gallery with rotating exhibits.
- Classes to help educate young readers. Kids book clubs.
- Continue to house Bridgerland Literacy.
- A chess club would be nice.
- Open storytimes like the North Logan Library does.
- Lectures on Saturday afternoons with artists, writers, etc.
- Feature original art from Logan City artists.
- Longer time limits on computers.
- I think it would be great to offer book groups. Different genre interests could dictate groups and having a space available and a mediator or discussion leader from the library would be great!
- I'd love to see some book club features--groups of books that can be checked out for book clubs around the valley.
- Need to have a festival of books to showcase Utah writers.
- I think the library should host clubs and organizations in the valley for teens and preteens - chess, games, book clubs, crafts, etc.
- Books by mail service.
- You could invite community members to display their collections of items of interest (hobbies, WWII memorabilia, dinosaur fossils, boy scouting, sports memorabilia, etc.) periodically...serving as a changeable "museum!"
- I think a room with internet access for kids and parents would be very useful for people who don't have access at home. It would be nice to be separated from people who want a quiet atmosphere while working at the computer.
- Continue updating webpage.
- A get it fast section where you put popular books that you can check out for 25 cents a day.
- A program where those who want to learn Spanish can team up with those who want to learn English and each person takes turns talking/reading in English/Spanish to help each other.
- A film festival would be fun -- classic films with discussion afterwards.
- It would be nice if volunteers from the library went and read to the elderly.
- Bookdrops at other locations in the city.
- Writing classes for kids.
- Parenting classes.
- Reading incentives for children.
- Evening storytime sessions for parents who work.
- Tours and classes about how to use the library.
- It would be cool if they had tutors to help you with school work.
- Story hour story tellers from our international community.
- Film and photo/art exhibits from around the world.
- Outreach to Spanish speaking community.

Design
How should the new library look and feel? What architectural features will help the building respond to changing community needs? What other libraries have you seen that might serve as a model for us?
- Parking must be major concern.
- An atrium seating w/ coffee-sandwich bar (like USU library or Borders)w/ electronic facilities.
- Open it up and create talk areas as well as silent areas.
- Quality construction. Marble & hardwood.
- Greenery.
- Lots of windows and natural light.
- Maybe a fountain or water feature.
- The new Salt Lake City main library is fabulous. It is open and airy.
- Sand Point, ID has a wonderful library for such a small community.
- The new USU Library is a great model. It has certain spaces for certain activities, such as group areas, noisy areas, study areas, etc.
- Retail shops (could draw more people down town and to the library) including a coffee shop and a bookstore.
- The library needs more and larger meeting rooms (as well as rooms for small groups) for community groups and these need to be high tech with projectors for PowerPoint presentations. Attracting more people to use the facility should be a priority and this can be accomplished with meeting rooms.
- I love the materials and overall feeling of the new Centerville Utah Library.
- I think it should have a recital hall or an auditorium.
- A play area in the childrens section.
- Large dedicated room for children's programs.
- ADA (Americans With Disabilities Act) accessible. Include wide aisles, accesible bathrooms, close parking, and ADA accessible seating and study carrels.
- Carmel Clay Library in Carmel Indiana has an open area where parents and kids can do homework together as well as have something to eat or drink.
- Green building using solar energy wherever possible.
- Space for simultaneous storytimes.
- Flexible design with adaptable spaces.
- More display areas to feature new books, CDs, etc.
- Different kinds of seating for different kinds of people. Comfortable seating to read magazines and books.
- Comfy bean bag chairs for kids/teens.
- Outside space with weather proof furniture for reading outdoors in good weather.
- Please have a drive up book drop.
- An outdoor part of the libary that could have booths for events like Summerfest.
- An ampitheater for outdoor spaces.
- A gothic style building would be very beautiful and would give a sense of permanance.
- Something classy kind of like the city offices building.
- A puppet theater.
- Reflect elements of classic historical design-Ionic columns.
- Multiple stories.
- Medford Oregon Library or the new Eugene Oregon Library.
- Relaxing. Lots of little private spaces to curl up and read or find quiet desks to work.
- Multiple floors are nice to separate age groups.
- It might be nice to have a computer lounge rather than a computer "lab" type of atmosphere
- Homework tutoring areas.
- Orem Public Library has very good feel. I love that library.
- Clifton Park-Halfmoon Library in Clifton Park, New York is a brand new "Green" library that has a decent floor-plan for the main part of the library.
- remove computers from children's book area, or separate with a room, or something. They are a huge distraction from reading for children.
- Should reflect the heritage of the area.
- A separate young adult area with a young adult librarian.
- Jeffersonville Public Library in Indiana remodeled their library. The new design of the library reflects the heritage of the library.
- Williamson County Library in Franklin, TN just built a a library that would be the size of the library that you would need for your new library.
- It would be cool if it had the look of an old building .
- I like the idea of park-like area near or around the library.
- An area where books can be listened to on tape and read in Braille.
- Pictures of individuals who have added to history and founding fathers/mothers of Cache Valley.
- Warm soft colors to relax and involk serenity upon entering.
- Put a few bay windows in with window seating for people to seat in and view our beautiful tablernacle, temples, homes, and mountains.
- A large arched entry would be very beautiful.
- Drive-up window to return books or pick up books that have been placed on hold.
- I would like the feel of the library to be more traditional rather than ultra-modern.
- North Logan Library
- A place to park strollers and hang coats.
- A family bathroom would be really nice.
- Stained glass artwork hanging in the windows.
- Match the architectural style of historic Logan buildings like the newly renovated Courthouse.
- I dislike the angular modern "hard" look of a lot of new buildings.
- Fireplaces
- Build a new structure in a news location -not on main street.
- Fort Collins, Colorado has really nice city library. Something like that would be a great model.
- I enjoy the Mesa, AZ youth library.
- I like the reading room at the library in Sugar House (2200 South Highland Drive). There is a fireplace, tables and places to sit and read
a newspaper or book. It is invariably quiet in this room, and it makes for a pleasant experience.
Other
Other ideas?
- Retail center as major funding method. Citizens need to know that some of the cost will be paid for by rents, leases, etc. if possible.
- Must be a center for wide-diverse demographic society.
- Covered bike parking would be great-- more bike parking facilities with a roof over some of the spaces.
- Space for events like the Salt Lake City Library.
- Space for the Gardeners Market.
- Fish/reptile tanks in children's area.
- More bulletin boards for community info and resources.
- I would be thrilled to see the library open on Sundays.
- Used book sales to provide low cost books for people and also raise money for the library.
- Would like extended hours on weekend 10 to 7 pm.
- I would love a program that kept track of what I already checked out.
- To help raise money a small fee could be charged for Internet usage and for movie rentals. Higher late fees would also help.
- It would be nice to have a place where you can leave your children while you look for books so you don't have kids running around.
- Put together a time capsule to be buried on the property and opened in 50 or 100 years and invite ideas from the entire community on what to include!
- Need large tables to spread things out on. Ie: Newspapers or homework.
- Play soft background music.
- I like the idea of a restaurant on top, capturing the wonderful view.
