Heart Beats

This exhibition combines Beat writers with little magazines and the artwork of the period sourced from NEHMA's collection and the Merrill-Cazier Library to communicate the interconnectedness of the entire Beat artistic scene.

Exhibition runs from November 21st through February 1st.

The Beat artists represented in this exhibition embody unique expressions of the artistic rebellion that rocked American culture during the 1950s and can be considered individual beats within the pulsating “Beat heart.” Poet Allen Ginsberg’s first public reading of his poem “Howl,” at the Six Gallery in San Francisco on October 7, 1955, triggered an unanticipated explosion of emotional energies unleashed by his denouncement of spiritual emptiness and blind conformity to a growing capitalist, materialist society.

Logan Tabernacle Christmas Concert Series

The Logan Tabernacle presents its 2019 Christmas Concert Series. All performances are free and open to the public. Most performances begin at 7:00 pm.

USU Exhibit: Haikus, Modernism and Stanton MacDonald-Wright's

Stanton MacDonald-Wright’s “Haiga Portfolio” (1965-1966) blends Eastern and Western influences, pairing vibrant modernist paintings with haikus written by some of Japan’s most influential poets.

USU Exhibit: Sky Above, Earth Below

Sky Above, Earth Below traces the development of western landscape photography from the late 19th century to the 21st century, starting with early American photographers like Myra Albert Wiggins, Edward Curtis, and Karl Struss and concluding with contemporary photographers like Barry Andersen, Kimberly Anderson, Karalee Kuchar, and Charlotte Trolinger. The exhibition includes work from members of the Seattle Camera Club, FSA (Farm Security Administration), f/64 (a group of 20th-century photographers known for precise exposures and depiction of natural forms) and contemporary photography portfolios such as American Roads (printed in 1981), The Museum Project (printed in 2015), and DEMARCATION (printed in 2018).

The event is free and open to the public.

USU Exhibition: Latinx from the NEHMA Collection

Latinx works of art represent a growing part of the NEHMA collection and reflect a significant influence in Western American art. New acquisitions by Yolanda Gonzalez, Leo Limón, Paul Sierra and Eloy Torrez will be featured in Latinx from the Collection as well as a grouping of paños, artworks created on handkerchiefs by artists incarcerated in Texas penitentiaries.

Latinx from the NEHMA Collection is co-curated by USU Art History Professor Alvaro Ibarra and NEHMA Curator of Collections and Exhibitions Bolton Colburn.

The 36th annual Novemberfest Arts and Crafts Fair takes place over the Thanksgiving weekend and kicks off the Christmas season. There are over 70 booths offering high quality wares ranging from jewelry, toys, clothing, artwork, lotions, soaps, purses and home decor. Santa visits from noon-3pm.

4:00 PM Center Street Christmas Celebration

The City of Logan and the Logan Downtown Alliance announce the Logan City Christmas Celebration and Tree Lighting with Santa’s arrival on a horse-drawn, antique Fire Wagon, a ribbon cutting for the newly installed Center Street Archway, and other festivities on Saturday, November 30, at 4 pm. The main events will be held on Center Street between Main Street and 100 West.

This will be the official grand opening of the renovated Center Street block and will feature Highpoint Clydes, the reigning World Champions for a Clydesdale Six-Horse Hitch that just happen to live in Cache Valley.

Schedule:

  • 4:00 pm - Santa’s journey begins at 200 West and Center Street, and includes:
    • Santa on an antique horse-drawn fire wagon, pulled by two Champion Highpoint Clydesdales
    • Queen of Winter riding in a Six-Horse Hitch wagon from Highpoint Clydes
    • Live Reindeer from Zootah, Characters from Frozen II, Anna, Elsa and Kristoff
  • 4:15 pm - Ribbon Cutting under the new Center Street Archway
    • Music by Logan High School students
  • 4:30 pm - Santa will flip the switch on holiday lighting, including three 18-foot Christmas trees
    • Horses and Reindeer available for photos and petting on Center Street, near the archway
    • Candy ornament display windows unveiled at Bluebird Candy Company, 75 West Center
    • Hot chocolate, gingerbread cookies and other treats available at various businesses
    • Enjoy local businesses and restaurants, many with holiday decorations and specials
  • 5:30 pm - Santa “magically appears” on the stage of the Utah Theatre (doors open at 5 pm)
    • Children may visit with Santa from 5:30 – 7:30 pm (families will be seated in warm theatre, and will be called up row by row for their turn)
  • 7:30 pm - Entertainment
    • Free screening of A Christmas Story at the Utah Theatre, limited to the first 330 guests
    • Cache Valley Civic Ballet’s The Nutcracker in the Ellen Eccles Theatre (matinee performance also at 1:30 pm)
