USU Exhibit: Mary Claire Becker and Amanda Lee

Marie Claire Becker’s research explores the fetishization of landscape as “other” in industrialized cultures, particularly in the United States, through artworks that rearrange and re-contextualize human-made depictions of Nature. In her work, botanical designs rooted in the domestic are exaggerated to the point of parody verging on oversaturated kitsch. By highlighting visions of Nature that are embedded in American culture, she aims to emphasize their artificiality. Her work investigates and responds to man-made nature as a way to further understand her ecological identity and her responsibility as a post-digital human.

Opening receptions October 8th from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, at the Tippetts & Eccles Galleries.

The exhibition includes work from members of the Seattle Camera Club, FSA (Farm Security Administration), f/64 (a group of 20th-century photographers known for precise exposures and depiction of natural forms) and contemporary photography portfolios such as American Roads (printed in 1981), The Museum Project (printed in 2015), and DEMARCATION (printed in 2018).
