USU Big Bands Performance

In 1963, Duke Ellington’s big band embarked upon a world tour that with stops in a number of exotic locations: Damascus, Amman, Isfahan, Calcutta, Bombay, New Delhi, Dacca, Kabul, Ramallah, Beirut and Baghdad, and many other cities in the Middle East and India. The following year found Duke’s band touring Japan. Inspired by their travels, Ellington and his collaborator Billy Strayhorn wrote several compositions recounting their impressions of these intoxicating locations, resulting in the Grammy-winning album Far East Suite. Join the USU big bands on a musical journey as they explore some of Ellington’s most exotically rich compositions.
