Fall Reads For Book Clubs

ORPHAN TRAIN by Christina Baker Kline. Seventeen-year-old Penobscot Indian Molly Ayer knows that a community-service position helping an elderly widow clean out her attic is the only thing keeping her out of juvenile hall. But as Molly helps Vivian sort through her keepsakes and possessions, she discovers that she and Vivian aren't as different as they appear. Moving between contemporary Maine and Depression-era Minnesota, ORPHAN TRAIN is a dramatic, emotional story of unexpected friendship from a little known time in our nation's history.

DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY by Erik Larson. A vivid account of the tragedies and triumphs of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago and the concurrent depravities of America's first serial killer. In alternating chapters, former Wall Street Journal reporter Eric Larson tells the stories of Daniel H. Burnham, chief planner and architect of exposition, and Dr. Henry Howard Holmes, whose World's Fair Hotel, just a short streetcar ride away, housed windowless rooms, a gas chamber, secret chutes, and a basement crematory. A gripping story!

FRANKENSTEIN by Mary Shelley. A monster assembled by a scientist from parts of dead bodies develops a mind of his own as he learns to loathe himself and hate his creator. The 1818 text of this classic cautionary tale was selected as Utah State University's 2014 Common Literature Experience.
