Union Pacific Challenger Engine

Date: Spring 1982

Address: Ogden Train Depot

In the spring of 1982 this old steam engine came down out of Weber Canyon. The Challenger engines were built between 1936 and 1944. There were a total of 105 constructed that ran lines throughout the Union Pacific Railroad system. They are sometimes incorrectly called a "Big Boy" engine, but this nickname is more properly given to a subsequent locomotive design.
