![]() ![]() Book: On Acting by Laurence Olivier Recommended by: Joseph, Associate Librarian This final book by Sir Laurence, generally acknowledged as the greatest actor of the 20th century, is equal parts memoir and acting instruction. Written only three years before his death in 1989, it provides a unique look into the acting profession on stage and screen by one who was in the middle of it from the 1920s onward. I highly enjoyed this book and am grateful the author chose to record both his advice and memories before leaving us to return to the warm stage lights in the sky. Want more reading suggestions? ![]() ![]() Book: All But My Life by Gerda Weissman Klein Recommended by: Barbara, Library Technical Assistant All But My Life is the biography of Gerda Weissmann Klein and is the basis for the moving HBO Academy Award winning documentary, "One Survivor Remembers". The book tells of Gerda's experiences during WWII as she loses her family and friends, suffers the deprivations of concentration camps, and embarks on long winter marches through Europe. Though her story tells of horrors, it also mentions friendships and the goodness of people who helped her. This summer I visited a Jewish Synagogue in Poland. Because not one Jewish person returned to this town, the Synagogue now sits empty as a memorial to those who lost their lives. As I visited, I couldn't help but think of Gerta and how amazing it was that a young girl could survive what she did and still see the goodness in people. Want more reading suggestions?
