Book: The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper

"The Dark is Rising" (first published in 1973) is one of my favorite childrens novels. Will Stanton, the youngest of 9 children, learns on his 11th birthday that he is one of the Old Ones  people who have special abilities, can travel through time, and who fight the darkness which is trying to take over the world. This is a beautifully written, remarkable fantasy novel that I enjoy re-reading every winter.
