![]() Staff Reading Pick
![]() Here is another reading pick from the Logan Library Staff. Book: Stars and swastikas : the boy who wore two uniforms by Walter Schröder Recommended by: Barbara, Library Technical Assistant Walter Schröder's parents came to the US after WWII. Walter was born in the US and lived in New York until he was seven, when his parents moved back to Germany. At school he had to become part of the Hitler Youth and when he was 15 he was drafted and sent to man Antiaircraft guns. He was captured and soon it was realized that he spoke "Yank" and was used as a translator. When it was found out that he was a US citizen he was drafted into the US Army. What is interesting about the book is that it isn't an everyday WWII memoir, but a great description of life during the Nazi Era and early cold war years. Walter ended up working for the U.S. Defense Department for almost thirty years and was awarded the "Navy Superior Service Medal & Citation" for his contributions. Want more reading suggestions? ![]() Here is another reading pick from the Logan Library Staff. Book: The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey Recommended by: Karen, Senior Librarian If you like fables or fairy tales and enjoy modern retellings, you are in for a treat! Combining the Russian fable "Little Daughter of the Snow" with a time and location of 1920's Alaska, "The Snow Child" is an enchanting read. Ivey's descriptions are so realistic that I felt like I was in Alaska. The characters are intriguing and very human - or are they? Add this title to your list of 'must reads.' ![]() Here is another reading pick from the Logan Library Staff. Book: Dead End in Norvelt by Jack Gantos Recommended by: Lois, Associate Librarian Do you need a good laugh? Come with Jack Gantos to Norvelt, PA for a memorable summer in 1962 when he is grounded for accidentally firing a live bullet from his dad's Japanese sniper rifle (among other things). The only time 12-year-old Jack is allowed to leave home is to help Mrs. Volker--an elderly neighbor and the town medical examiner--compose obituaries for the local paper. (Jack actually gets out a lot, since all the old ladies in town start dying mysteriously.) If you appreciate the weird, the gross and the wacky--this book is for you! Want more reading suggestions?
