Book: Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner

Recommended by: Natalie, Technical Assistant

A fun read that offers an explanation for why snowmen look different the day after you make them: they play at night! Each page is beautifully illustrated, and has a look-and-find aspect. Can you find the dinosaur on every page?

Book: The Christmas Chronicles: The Legend of Santa Claus by Tim Slover

Recommended by: Debbie, Associate Librarian

This is a fun, imaginative version of how Santa became Santa, starting with the orphan, Klaus, who was taken in by a guild of craftsmen in 1343. After the Black Death had swept through the land, he made toys for all the surviving children in his village and delivered them, with the priest's blessing, on Christmas Eve to put some joy back into their lives. Those children told the children from other villages, and Klaus, not wanting to disappoint any of them, found himself with more deliveries to make than he could do in one night. Enter his (soon to be) wife, Anna, and her reindeer, Dasher. (The magic and the flying come in later.)

Book: The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry: A Novel by Rachel Joyce

Recommended by: Karen, Assistant Director

Harold Fry is an ordinary man recently retired and living in a small English village with his wife. Normally his days drag on, one after another. However one day, Harold received a letter from a friend who is dying and in hospice. He replies and walks to the corner to post his letter. On his way, he has a chance encounter that convinces him to deliver his response in person. So begins Harold's pilgrimage, an ordinary man who goes on a remarkable journey, not just to visit his friend one last time but a journey that changes his life and those around him. I found myself cheering for Harold as he walked in his yachting shoes and was inspired by his journey. Great read.

Bookcover - Desire of the Everlasting Hills
Here is another reading pick from the Logan Library staff.

Book: Desire of the Everlasting Hills: The World Before and After Jesus by Thomas Cahill

Recommended by: Joseph, Adult Nonfiction Librarian

This book is an interesting look at the cultures, people, languages, and events that shaped the world around Jesus. From the influence of Alexander the Great and the Greeks on the Jews to the personalities and writing styles of Jesus's early followers, many intriguing influences are discussed. While not comprehensive, Cahill's mostly-secular work is both engaging and accessible.
