If you havent met Liesl or Po yet, you are missing out! Enter a world where strange magic is abroad, written by Lauren Oliver and read on CD by Jim Dale (narrator of the Harry Potter series.) In this loveable fantasy, a mix-up involving the greatest magic in the world has tremendous consequences for Liesl, an orphan who has been locked in an attic, Will, an alchemist's runaway apprentice, and Po, a ghost. Read as they are pursued by friend and foe while making an important journey. This story has now found a spot on my list a favorite JFiction.

Book: The Aeneid
by Virgil, translated by Robert Fitzgerald

How do you review a true classic? Virgil's Aenied, written around 25 BC, is the epic tale of the founding of the Roman empire. In beautifully descriptive language, Virgil (and Fitzgerald as his able translator from the Latin) tells the story of Aeneas, a refugee from the fall of Troy, who famously follows his fate ordained by the gods through violent storms in the Mediterranean, a passionate love affair in North Africa, a haunting visit to the underworld, and victory on the Italian peninsula after several shockingly brutal battles.

 by Helen Thayer

In 1988, at the age of 50, Helen Thayer became the first woman in the world to travel on foot to the magnetic North Pole. Her only companion was Charlie, her loyal husky, who was integral to her survival. This is the story of their heroic trek and extraordinary relationship as they faced polar bears, unimaginable cold, and a storm that destroyed most of their supplies and food. I first read this many years ago and still think of it often. I am inspired by her courage and determination.
