Book: Spillover: Animal Infections and the Next Human Pandemic by David Quammen

Recommended by: Kara, Library Page

When a virus that usually only sickens animals jumps species to infect humans its called a spillover, and some of them, such as Ebola, hantavirus, and HIV, have devastating effects on us.  In this fascinating book, author David Quammen explains how, when, and why such viruses spill over, and what can be done to prevent a spillover from causing a pandemic like the 1918 flu.  While Quammen sticks close to the latest science, explaining difficult concepts in an eloquent, conversational style, this is no dry science book!  Be prepared to go on an Indiana Jones-worthy adventure to all corners of the globe, from Gabon on the trail of the origins of AIDS, to southern China and Singapore to discover just how scary SARS really was (hint: really scary).

Book: The Winter Sea by Susannah Kearsley

Recommended by: Lois, Associate Librarian

The Winter Sea is pretty darn good! I'm a sucker for well-researched historical fiction, parallel timelines, solitary narrators obsessed with books, and atmospheric Scottish castles. If you're in the mood for a compelling historical book like those Kate Moreton, Mary Stewart, or Daphne DuMaurier write-a story that might just have you reaching for a tissue-try The Winter Sea. Prepare to be transported to the coast of Scotland.

Book: Between Pulpit and Pew: The Supernatural World in Mormon History and Folklore edited by W. Paul Reeve and Michael Scott Van Wagenen

Recommended by: Joseph, Adult Nonfiction Librarian

If you live in a predominantly Mormon area, you may have heard stories linking the biblical Cain to Bigfoot, or whispers about the Bear Lake Monster. Have you ever wanted to know more about the intersection between Mormonism and the supernatural? Where did these stories originate? Why do they perpetuate? Seven such topics are examined in this title from USU Press.
